Cell Phone Policy

On February 18, 2026, the Mapleton Public Schools’ Board of Education updated its policy regarding personal technology (Policy JICJ). This update required each school to formalize a plan that commits to “keeping personal technology devices away for the day.”

Following a period of feedback from our staff, students, and families this spring, MEC Prep will implement a new technology policy beginning this fall.

Why "Away for the Day"?

Our goal is to create an environment where every student can thrive. We believe this
change is necessary for several reasons:

  • Learning: Studies show that even the mere presence of a cell phone reduces attention and memory. Constant notifications and the urge to check social media fragments students’ focus which leads to lower academic performance and less connection with their peers.
  • Mental Health: Heavy phone use, particularly social media, has been linked to increased rates of anxiety and depression. Eliminating personal device use during school hours can reduce these stressors and encourage more face-to-face connections.
  • Student Feedback: During our recent survey, one student noted: "Phones are a big distraction that take away from actual learning."

The Policy

To support a distraction-free environment, students will not have access to personal technology (including phones and earbuds) during instructional time or passing periods.
Secure Storage: Upon arrival, students will place their devices in a school-provided pouch and lock it.
Student Possession: Students remain responsible for their tech by keeping the locked pouch on their person throughout the day.
Mid-Day Access: Staff members will be available to unlock pouches before lunch, allowing students to use their devices freely during their break.
Afternoon Re-securing: After lunch, devices must be relocked in the pouch. Staff will provide a final unlock at the end of the school day.

Addressing Violations

To ensure a consistent learning environment, we will not issue warnings. If a device or
earbuds are visible during restricted times, the following steps will be taken:

  • 1st Violation: The device is confiscated; the student may collect it from the front office at dismissal.
  • 2nd Violation: The device is confiscated; a parent or guardian must pick it up from the office.
  • 3rd Violation: The student must check their phone into the front office every morning for two weeks.
