Mapleton Early Career Prep’s blend of traditional classes, independent projects, and real-world internships, supports learning and growth, one student at a time. As a part of the Big Picture Learning Network, the entire educational experience at MEC is customized to align with each student’s passions, talents, and goals.  

Through internships, independent projects, college-prep coursework, and access to college classes, MEC helps students explore possible career paths while building skills like communication, responsibility, and problem-solving. A multi-year advisory model ensures every student is known well, supported consistently, and guided toward next steps after graduation.

Fall Guest Expert Day at MEC Prep!

About 150 Mapleton Early Career Prep (MEC) students connected with community professionals today during the school’s annual Fall Guest Expert Day. This career-fair style event featured 35 guest speakers from a range of industries, including medical, culinary, transportation, and community service.

Representatives Clinica Colorado, the Thornton Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Colorado Department of Transportation spent the morning sharing their career journeys and answering students’ questions.

New this year, students brought résumés to share with guest speakers, giving them the chance to practice professional networking and even explore potential internships.

Congratulations to Mapleton Early Career Prep (MEC-Prep) Internship Coordinator Lisa Hollingsworth on winning the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Rising Star Award, a national honor! 

The ACTE is dedicated to empowering educators to deliver high-quality CTE programs that ensure all students are positioned for career success. Their Rising Star Award recognizes new career development professionals at the secondary level, new to the profession who have made significant contributions to CTE and the counseling profession, demonstrating innovation and professional commitment early in their careers.

MEC Prep hosts Career Love Day

Mapleton Early Career Prep (MEC Prep) 9-12th grade students networked with professionals in the community to gain exposure to different career opportunities as part of their Career Love Day!

Representatives from Ball Aerospace, United, Clinica Family Health, City of Thornton Fire Department, and other career fields talked to students about what they love about their jobs, navigating the hiring process, job readiness, and their personal experiences in their respective fields.

"I'm excited about the variety of speakers here," MEC Prep Director Robin Graham said. "There are many careers here students haven't had exposure to."

Moot Court Competition

Mapleton had a fantastic showing at the University of Colorado Law School’s Marshall-Brennan Moot Court Competition! The annual competition is an opportunity for high school students from the Denver-Metro area to display their oral advocacy and critical thinking skills, as well as learn about careers in the law.

Women's Entrepreneurship Day Colorado Summit

Mapleton might have some female business owners among its alumni before we know it. Fifteen Mapleton Early Career Prep (MEC) female students attended the 5th Annual Women's Entrepreneurship Day Colorado Summit at the CU Denver Business School last Friday. The event was “planned to inspire and empower women and girls on the Colorado entrepreneurial journey.”
